Protect your pet – and your pocket!

Ended (Ended on 5th Jun 2016)

2016 has seen some real changes for pet owners in Nottingham. There is a new law now in force with a £500 fine for those who have not microchipped their dogs.

In addition, Churchcroft Veterinary Centre has identified a tick that is new to the area and has the potential to spread devastating disease especially amongst dogs.
This is therefore a really important time to make sure you are fully up to date with preventative care for your pet.

By Law all dogs must be microchipped by the 6th of April

Ended (Ended on 10th Apr 2016)

To help avoid the £500 fine we have a choice of microchips on special offer to choose from, ranging from £10-£25

The law has been brought in to reduce the shocking number of stray dogs in the U.K. and hence reduce the number of traffic accidents and other problems to which stray dogs contribute.

To help ensure that all dogs are legally compliant by the due date, here at Churchcroft we have offers on two types of microchip.

The basic micro... Read More

Make sure your puppy grows up into a well-rounded individual

Ended (Ended on 31st Mar 2016)

Did you know that puppies have a critical learning period before 12 weeks old?

During that first 12 weeks they will accept new experiences without fear which prevents a lot of problems that owners of unsocialised puppies experience. Poorly socialised puppies can be aggressive to other dogs or fearful and yappy.

Puppies that are well socialised as youngsters become more sociable adult dogs who are easier to walk amongst other dogs and are genera... Read More

Puppy and Kitten offer (plus vaccine offer for adult dogs and cats).

Ended (Ended on 29th Feb 2016)

Have you recently got a new puppy or kitten or are you getting one soon? Churchcroft Vets have a great offer for you.

How the offer works

Vaccines are vital to prevent fatal diseases in dogs and cats. The initial protection needs 2 injections given a few weeks apart. Usually, since this involves twice the amount of vaccine, this is more expensive than a top-up vaccination. However, as a new year special offer the team here at Churchcroft Vets ... Read More

5 Star: Mrs Inglis "At every stage George has been caring and compassionate, yet always 100% honest with us. Making an impossibly difficult decision is always made easier by being well-informed. Encountering vets who really love animals and who greet their patients with affection when they arrive for an appointment is a lovely thing, and every pet owner should be so lucky. We know that the time we have left with Oz is short, but knowing that George, Julia, Gabby and the rest of the team will be there to hold our hands (and paws) every step of the way is both reassuring and very comforting. Thank you Churchcroft."

We totally agree that cats should all be microchipped. As you know, it is now a legal obligation for dogs to be microchipped and it makes complete sense that this should be true for cats too. Microchipping massively assists re-uniting all pets with their owners as the system of local councils and veterinary practices working together is well established and successful.

Henry ran off across the park and munched on a tasty bone he found. The following morning he felt very unwell and was passing blood. The X-ray shows the problem. Once we'd removed the problem he felt a whole world better! Don't eat bones!

George will be on BBC radio Nottingham's breakfast show very shortly this morning to discuss the disease Babesiosis. This is the disease affecting dogs that is carried and transmitted by ticks.

Here's a picture of the tick in question. It has shorter mouth parts than the tick we commonly find locally and more of a pattern over the back.

Clarification for dog owners. There has been some interest in the tick that we found from Bramcote Woods. This tick was one of the species that can carry Babesiosis. We have NOT at this stage had a patient with Babesiosis. The important point is that since Babesia appears to now be established in the U.K. and since we have the vector (the transmitting parasite) living locally we should look to improve our tick control before the disease is here.

Warning to all dog owners. We have identified a tick picked up by one of our patients as the carrier of Babesiosis. This disease is the fatal blood-borne disease that has been in the news recently. The affected dog had picked up this tick in Bramcote Woods so it seems it is now in Nottingham. Please come and review your parasite control as soon as you can.
